The backgammon history is so overwhelming because you can't understand how ancient it is and how much he have been through while playing it.
The backgammon belongs to the 'Tables' family which exist over 6,000 years. You probably played it all the time at the beach, at home, with friends or family without knowing that it's the most ancient game in the world. Well here is a little review on backgammon game.

We know the first backgammon was played in ancient Egypt it called 'senet' it was controlled by a toss of a dice, some four thousand years ago. It spread to Athens and from there to the Roman Empire. Here it got his new name 'Tabula'.
The Tabula was played with 3 boards and 3 dice. Later the Tabula was played with 2 boards and 3 dice. The Romans enlarged the board, increased the number of points and men, and made it a game in a box, similar to the backgammon of today. While backgammon with 3 dice was played a similar game was develop in Persia called 'Nared' and it was played with 2 dice. When the Islam started to effect Europe the backgammon got a shape which is very similar to nowadays shape.

The comeback of backgammon was in England and it affected France Italy, Sweden, Germany and turkey as well. It was played among aristocrats despite the resistance of the church then it became very popular to gamble on backgammon until it was outlawed.
Some years later the queen Elizabeth confirmed backgammon back and England was back playing backgammon. In that time 2 rules was added: one - if you toss the dice and it shows the same number, you will make 4 moves. Second - the "gammon win" - happens when one player bears off all of his checkers out before his rival even put all of his checkers in his basis.
In England the backgammon got his actual name at first it was called 'Table' then 'Tabula' and now - Backgammon.
